This is yet another famous classic combo dish from Kerala, India kappa puzhukku-kappa vevichathu-tapioca/cassava/yuca and fish Curry. Another famous combo is plate of Kappa Puzhukku-Kappa Vevichathu with Mulaku Chammanthi(spicy chilli chutney) Yummy! I have no other words to describe this dish. So tell me which combo among the two, is your favorite? Kappa and Meen curry (fish curry) or Kappa and Mulaku chammanthi ?
For most of the Keralities/Malayalis this humble dish is very familiar and favorite, for me it is yet another dish makes me feel super nostalgic. Kappa Puzhukku-Kappa Vevichathu is boiled and mashed Tapioca-Yuca-Cassava seasoned with spice mixture and ground coconut served with fish curry or dried red chilli chutney. Most of the restaurant and tea shops, especially toddy shop in Kerala serves this kappa and fish curry. So let’s see how it’s made in my kitchen…

How to make Kappa Puzhukku-Kappa Vevichathu Recipe | Mashed Tapioca-Cassava-Yuca Recipe:
Clean tapioca /kappa and chop into small cubes.Pour enough water to the cleaned tapioca so that all the pieces will be immersed completely,cook uncovered and allow to boil.When the water boils,remove and drain the water and again add the same amount of water, salt,turmeric powder and cook till it turns to very soft. and drain off excess water from cooked tapioca.
In a pan, heat the coconut oil and crackle mustard seeds, cumin seeds,sliced shallots,green chilles, dried red chillies and curry leaves and sauté till shallots turns to translucent. Add the cooked tapioca/kappa and mix well. Then add the grated coconut, combine everything together well. Using the back side of a wooden spoon, mash the tapioca pieces well and remove from the flame.Enjoy Kappa Puzhukku-Kappa Vevichathu with Spicy fish curry-Meen Mulakittathu /Mulaku Chammanthi or Spicy chicken curry.
Method 2
Grind coarsely grated coconut, green chillies, dry red chillies, garlic, shallots, cumin seeds and turmeric powder. Pulse in mixer grinder couple of time.No need to add water.Then transfer the cooked tapioca pieces to a pan and keep it in a very low flame.Add ground coconut mixture and using the back side of a wooden spoon, mash the tapioca pieces well and remove from the flame.Then heat the coconut oil in the pan and crackle mustard seeds, cumin seeds, sliced shallots,green chilles, dried red chillies and curry leaves and sauté till shallots turns to translucent and pour the seasoning to the cooked tapioca and enjoy with Spicy fish curry-Meen Mulakittathu /Mulaku Chammanthi or Spicy chicken curry.
Kappa Puzhukku-Kappa Vevichathu |Mashed Tapioca
Ingredients
- Tapioca/Yuca/Cassava/Kappa : 2 medium
- Green Chilly : 2 nos slit
- Turmeric powder : 1/4 tsp
- Curry leaves : a sprig
- Grated Coconut : 1/2 cup
- Small onions /Shallots : 4-5 sliced
- Garlic : 2 cloves crushed
- Mustard seeds : 1/2 tsp
- Cumin Seeds : 1/2 tsp
- Coconut oil : 1 tbsp
- Dried Red chillies : 3-4
- Salt to taste
Instructions
- Clean tapioca /kappa and chop into small cubes.
- Pour enough water to the cleaned tapioca so that all the pieces will be immersed completely,cook uncovered and allow to boil.When the water boils,remove and drain the water and again add the same amount of water, salt to taste, turmeric powder and cook till it turns to very soft.Drain off excess water from cooked tapioca.

- Enjoy kappa puzhukku -Kappa Vevichathu with Spicy Fish Curry/Mulaku Chammanthi or with Chicken curry.
- Method 2:
- Clean tapioca /kappa and chop into small cubes.
- Pour enough water to the cleaned tapioca so that all the pieces will be immersed completely,cook uncovered and allow to boil.When the water boils,remove and drain the water and again add the same amount of water, salt to taste, turmeric powder and cook till it turns to very soft.Drain off excess water from cooked tapioca.
- Meanwhile grind coarsely grated coconut, green chillies, dry red chillies, garlic, shallots, cumin seeds and turmeric powder.Pulses in mixer grinder for couple of times. No need to add water.
- Then transfer the cooked tapioca pieces to a pan and keep it in a very low flame. Add ground coconut mixture and using the back side of a wooden spoon, mash the tapioca pieces well mixing and remove from the flame.
- Then heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds. When it crackles, add curry leaves and dry red chillies and pour the seasoning to the cooked tapioca.
- Enjoy kappa with Spicy Fish Curry/Mulaku Chammanthi or with Chicken curry.
